In celebration of Virginia Archives Month, join us for a virtual panel discussion about archiving underrepresented Virginia history. How can archives build community? What is the value of seeing your experience represented in history? What role do archivists play in advocating for previously hidden stories?

Blake McDonald, a survey and grants specialist with the Department of Historic Resources, will moderate a discussion with a panel of speakers who will explore these questions and more and describe their work as archivists and memory workers who preserve and share the histories of traditionally marginalized communities. The panel includes Nix Mendy, digital archivist for OUTWORDS (The Outwords Archive, Inc.); Katie Stueckle with the Southwest Virginia LGBTQ History Project; Clint Whitten, Ph.D., associate director for the Center for Rural Education at Virginia Tech; and Lydia Neuroth, manager of the Library’s Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative project.

This program is presented by Virginia Archives Month, the Library of Virginia and OUTWORDS. Programming assistance is provided by the Friends of the Virginia State Archives, a 501(c)(3) organization.
